Falcon Road

An award winning 0 gauge layout

by Ian Harper.

Set in the outskirts of a busy city centre station in the London and North Eastern Region.

Falcon Road is depicted in the early 1960s and is a natural successor to Ian's last award winning layout - Haymarket Cross.

The scenery reflects the approach to some of our major cities, where the railway uses cuttings and tunnels to get into the city centre stations and goods yards.

Falcon Road is a typical inner city terrace, with a mixture of houses, the local pub, fish and chip shop, small factory, corner shops and a local garage, all overlooking the railway cutting and the busy shed area.

Sound equipped locos are both 'ready-to-run' and 'kit-built', including Pacifics and Diesels of the era, pulling both passenger and freight trains.

The layout has working semaphore and ground signals, all operated by the Digitrax DCC system's handsets.

The layout's 28ft x 2ft scenic section is complimented by a 4ft traverser board and a hidden return section, enabling realistic operation of 0 gauge trains.  So, the operating footprint is 35ft x 6ft allowing 4 operators to work the layout.  With remote handsets, we can operate from the front, interacting with visitors, as well as from the back.

The layout has its own lights, so we need 8ft overhead clearance.  We also require a 230v 10amp socket within 6ft of the layout.

As members of a model railway club, we realise the importance of keeping exhibition costs to a minimum.  We have found that we can transport two (or even three) layouts to a show in the one van.  Please contact the Club Secretary for more details via the 'contact us' page.
